CSTHEATEXCHANGER manufactures shell and tube heat exchangers directly from customer drawings. We have just completed production of a build-to-drawing shell and tube unit, and this article explains exactly how we take a customer's drawing set (or a drawing-plus-datasheet package) through review, fabrication, testing and shipment. If you already have a drawing, you can send it to us and we will return a technical review and quotation; if you only have process data, we will prepare the drawing for you.

How CSTHEATEXCHANGER reviews a shell and tube heat exchanger drawing before production

When a drawing set arrives, our engineering team runs a fixed review sequence. This is the part of the job that determines whether the exchanger will actually fit and perform, so we do not skip steps even on repeat orders.

1. Dimensional and interface check

  • Shell inside diameter, overall length and tube length

  • Nozzle sizes, ratings, orientation and face-to-face dimensions

  • Saddle or bracket positions and anchor-bolt pattern

  • Lifting lugs and clearance for bundle pull-out

2. Tube bundle geometry

  • Tube outside diameter, wall thickness and count

  • Tube pitch and layout pattern (triangular, rotated triangular, square, rotated square)

  • Baffle type, cut and spacing; tie rods and spacers

  • Tubesheet thickness and tube-to-tubesheet joint type (expanded, seal-welded, strength-welded)

3. Materials and corrosion allowance

Our shell and tube exchangers are built with tube bundles in copper, stainless steel, titanium, copper-nickel, brass or carbon steel, and shells in carbon steel or stainless steel. During review we confirm that every material called out on the drawing is compatible with the two fluids and with each other (galvanic pairs, chlorides, ammonia versus copper, and similar checks).

4. Design code and pressure boundary

We check the stated design pressure, design temperature, corrosion allowance and hydrotest pressure against the applicable pressure-vessel code referenced on the drawing, and we confirm that the mechanical design classification (for example a TEMA class such as R, C or B) matches the intended service.

5. Thermal sanity check

Even on a pure build-to-drawing job we re-run the thermal rating from the customer's process data. If the drawing cannot meet the stated duty, we tell the customer before production — not after commissioning.

The output of this review is a short technical report plus a marked-up drawing. Only after the customer signs off do we release the job to the shop.

Why customers send shell and tube drawings to CSTHEATEXCHANGER

There are three practical reasons plants and OEMs choose a build-to-drawing supplier rather than re-engineering from scratch:

  1. Exact fit for replacement. When an existing exchanger fails, the piping, foundations and platform are already in place. A drawing-matched unit installs without modifying anything around it.

  2. Faster approval cycle. With a drawing in hand, the review is a check rather than a design, so the time from inquiry to approved shop drawing is shorter.

  3. Documented traceability. A drawing-based order gives the customer a complete record: approved drawing, material certificates, weld records and test report all tied to one revision.

Can CSTHEATEXCHANGER manufacture a shell and tube heat exchanger from my existing drawings?

Yes. We manufacture directly from customer drawings. We first perform a manufacturability and materials review, return a marked-up drawing for approval, and only then release the job to production.

What if I only have process data and no drawing?

We will carry out the thermal and mechanical design and prepare a full drawing package for your approval before fabrication. Please provide fluids, flow rates, inlet and outlet temperatures, operating and design pressures, and any footprint or nozzle constraints.

Which materials can CSTHEATEXCHANGER use for shell and tube units?

Tube bundles are commonly supplied in copper, stainless steel, titanium, copper-nickel, brass or carbon steel; shells in carbon steel or stainless steel. Other materials can be quoted on request.

Can you match an existing exchanger exactly for a one-for-one replacement?

Yes. Matching the shell diameter, tube length, nozzle positions and support locations is the standard scope of a build-to-drawing order. Where the original internals were under-performing, we can propose improvements to the bundle while keeping the external interfaces unchanged.

Do you supply only the tube bundle if my shell is still good?

Yes. CSTHEATEXCHANGER supplies replacement straight-tube and U-tube bundles built to drawing, so a plant can reuse its existing shell.

Which fluids can the exchangers handle?

How are the finished units tested?
