1. Core Design Requirements for Banana Ripening

Banana rooms need stable temperature, uniform airflow, high humidity, and no direct cold wind on fruit.

Temp range: 13°C – 20°C (adjustable for different ripening stages)

Humidity: 85% – 95%RH

Airflow: horizontal circulation, no dead zones

Defrost: minimal, low-frequency

Material: food-safe, corrosion-resistant (ethylene + high humidity = corrosive)

2. Complete Air Cooler Unit Design

A. Type

Ceiling-mounted ducted / non-ducted air cooler

Horizontal blowing, top return air

B. Heat Exchanger (Coil)

Tube material: copper tube + aluminum fin

Fin spacing: 4.0mm – 5.0mm (wider to prevent clogging & frost buildup)

Rows: 4 – 6 rows (balanced cooling capacity and airflow)

Design pressure:

For normal refrigerant: ≥3.0MPa

For CO₂ refrigerant: ≥12.0MPa (high-pressure design)

C. Fan Design (Most Critical for Banana Rooms)

EC external rotor motors (energy-saving, adjustable speed)

Reversible fan function optional (improves uniformity in large rooms)

Air volume: high air volume, low wind speed

→ Avoid drying banana peel / causing uneven temperature

Air outlet: long strip air deflector to spread airflow evenly

D. Casing & Structure

Casing: galvanized sheet + plastic spray / 304 stainless steel

Drain pan: stainless steel, inclined design, no water accumulation

Suspension type: 4-point hanger with shock absorption pads

E. Defrost System

Electric heating defrost (most common for banana rooms)

Defrost starts by time + coil temperature

Drain pipe with heat tracing cable to prevent freezing

F. Drainage

Large diameter drain hole

U-shaped water trap to prevent air backflow

Insulated drain pipe

3. Airflow Layout Design (Key to Even Ripening)

Small room (≤2 rooms)

One air cooler mounted centrally on the ceiling

Air blows horizontally to the far wall, circulates back

Medium/large banana room

2 air coolers, one on each side

Airflow forms horizontal double circulation

Keep 0.8m – 1.2m distance from banana boxes

Do NOT blow directly at cartons

Goal:

Whole room temperature difference ≤ ±0.5°C

No hot spots, no cold spots

4. Matching Refrigeration System Design

Unit cooling capacity: 100W – 150W per m³ of room volume

Use small temperature difference design

→ Coil temperature not too low

→ Reduce humidity loss

For better humidity retention:

→ Reduce fan speed during cooling

→ Avoid excessive dehumidification

5. Control System Design

Independent electric control box

Digital temperature controller (0.1°C precision)

Fan: continuous running (low speed)

Defrost: automatic, 1–2 times per day (or as needed)

Protection:

Fan overload

High pressure

Defrost overheating

Power phase loss protection

6. Standard Technical Parameters (Example)

Cooling capacity: 15kW – 60kW

Fan quantity: 2 – 6 pcs

Fin space: 4.5mm

Defrost: electric heating

Power supply: 380V/3Ph/50Hz

Protection class: IP54

Installation: ceiling suspension
