Non-Freeze Steam Distributing Coil | How It Works & Freeze Prevention | CSTHEATEXCHANGER

In commercial AHUs handling sub-zero outdoor air (-10°C to -30°C), traditional single-tube steam coils frequently suffer catastrophic freeze-burst splits during modulated low-load operation.

At CSTHEATEXCHANGER, we engineer Heavy-Duty Non-Freeze Steam Distributing Coils (Dual-Tube / Tube-in-Tube Design). In this technical guide, our engineers explain why standard steam coils freeze and how steam distributing geometry guarantees freeze immunity in 100% outdoor makeup air systems.

1. Why Do Standard Steam Coils Freeze in Winter?

The root cause of steam coil freezing is condensate backup under modulated steam control:

                                                                     │

[ Sub-Zero Air (-15°C) Strikes Coil ] ──► [ Trapped Water Freezes & Expands ] ──► [ Tube Splits ]
  1. Modulating Valve Throttling: As heating demand decreases, the steam control valve throttles down, dropping internal coil pressure to near or below atmospheric pressure.

  2. Vacuum Lock: Without positive steam pressure, liquid condensate cannot overcome steam trap backpressure and remains trapped inside lower tube passes.

  3. Flash Freezing: Incoming sub-zero outdoor air freezes the trapped condensate, expanding by 9% and rupturing copper tube return bends.

  1. Inner Distribution Tube (5/8" OD): High-velocity steam enters the inner tube and discharges through precision-metered, directional jet orifices along the entire length.

  2. Outer Condensing Tube (1" OD): Steam condenses in the outer annular space, keeping the entire tube wall warm along its full span.

  3. Gravity Drainage: The outer tube slopes continuously toward the condensate outlet header, ensuring rapid gravity evacuation.
