Air Cooled Heat Exchanger for Cycle Converters of Mills


Air-Cooled Heat Exchangers (Tube-Fin Design)

Ideal for mid-range heat loads (10–50 kW) and mills with limited access to liquid coolants.


Design: Consists of copper or aluminum tubes (carrying a coolant, e.g., glycol-water) with aluminum fins to enhance air-side heat transfer. Fans force ambient air over the fins to dissipate heat.

Advantages:

Simple, low-maintenance design (no liquid piping infrastructure needed).

Cost-effective for small to medium cycloconverters.

Considerations for mills:

Dust/particle resistance: Metal chips and dust can clog fins. Use pre-filters (e.g., washable polyester) and wider fin spacing (8–10 fins per inch) to reduce blockages.

Vibration tolerance: Reinforce tube-to-header joints (brazed instead of soldered) and use vibration-damping mounts to withstand milling machine vibrations.

High ambient temps: Oversize by 15–20% to compensate for reduced cooling efficiency in hot environments.
