How to Clean Cassette Air Conditioner Evaporator?
Preparation Before Cleaning
Tools and Materials: Prepare a Phillips screwdriver, soft-bristle brush (bristle length 5-8mm), specialized air conditioner evaporator cleaner (neutral pH to prevent corrosion of aluminum fins), spray bottle, drip tray, cloth, and gloves.
Safety Precautions: Always turn off the main power supply and unplug the unit to prevent electric shock during cleaning.
Environmental Protection: Lay down a waterproof sheet or newspaper on the floor beneath the unit. Place a drip tray to prevent cleaning solution and condensation from staining the floor.
Core Cleaning Steps
Disassemble the Housing and Filter
Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws securing the front panel or return air panel of the indoor unit.
Remove the built-in air filter. Rinse it with clean water first; add a small amount of neutral detergent if heavily soiled. Air-dry for later use (this step can be performed separately on a regular basis to reduce dust accumulation on the evaporator).
Locate and Clean the Evaporator
After removing the filter, the internal evaporator (dense fins + copper tubing structure) becomes visible.
Shake the specialized evaporator cleaner well. Spray evenly from 20-30cm away from the evaporator fins, ensuring all gaps are covered. Focus spraying on areas with visible dust, grease, or light frost buildup.
Let it sit for 10-15 minutes to allow the cleaner to fully dissolve the grime. During this time, the grime will flow into the drip pan with the cleaner. Empty the drip pan promptly to prevent overflow.
Deep Descaling and Rinsing
For stubborn dust in fin gaps, gently brush along the fin direction using a soft-bristle brush (never brush sideways to prevent fin deformation). Apply light pressure to avoid puncturing copper tubes.
Fill a spray bottle with clean water and slowly rinse the evaporator surface until the runoff water runs clear and foam-free. Avoid direct water impact on electrical components during rinsing.
Drying and Reassembly
After cleaning, leave the air conditioner panel open to allow the evaporator to air dry naturally for 1-2 hours. Alternatively, run the unit in fan mode for 15 minutes to accelerate drying.
Once the evaporator is completely dry, reinstall the air filter. Align the panel with the clips or screw holes, then secure it by tightening the screws.
Precautions
Do not use high-pressure water jets, hard-bristle brushes, or corrosive cleaners (such as oxalic acid or hydrochloric acid), as these may damage the fin coating or copper tubing, leading to leaks.
If the evaporator surface has severe frost or ice buildup, first disconnect the power to allow it to thaw completely before cleaning. This prevents ice water from seeping into electrical circuits.
Cleaning is recommended every 3-6 months. Failure to clean regularly may reduce heat exchange efficiency (potentially increasing energy consumption by 10%-20%) and may lead to mold growth and unpleasant odors.
