Generator bearing oil cooler (power plant lube oil cooler) is a dedicated heat exchanger for cooling lubricating oil of guide bearings and thrust bearings on all types of generators, including steam turbine generators, gas turbine generators, hydro generators, offshore marine generators and industrial diesel generators.
Core Functional Purposes
1. Dissipate bearing friction heat: High-speed rotor rotation and heavy axial thrust generate massive frictional heat; the cooler continuously removes excess heat from turbine lube oil / mineral bearing oil.
2. Stable lubricating oil viscosity: Maintain oil outlet temperature at 40–50°C; if oil exceeds 60°C, viscosity drops sharply, oil film ruptures, leading to babbitt pad melting, shaft abrasion and generator forced outage.
3. Extend oil service life: Slow oil oxidation, acidification and sludge generation under high temperature, reduce oil replacement cycle and operation cost.
4. Guarantee long-cycle generator stable operation: Avoid bearing high-temperature alarms, load limitation and unplanned shutdown caused by insufficient cooling capacity.
5. Prevent oil-water cross-contamination: Strict separation between oil and cooling medium to stop water emulsifying lubricating oil and damaging bearing metal surfaces.
Safe Temperature Threshold for Generator Bearings
- Normal operating oil temperature: 40 ~ 50°C
- High-temperature alarm threshold: ≥55°C
- Trip protection temperature: ≥60°C
- Allowable oil temperature rise through bearing: 10 ~ 15°C
Working Principle (Two Main Cooling Medium Types)
2.1 Water-Cooled Type (Dominant for Large Power Generators)
Adopt shell-and-tube / submerged circular coil U-tube heat exchange structure, closed dual-fluid separation:
1. Hot lubricating oil discharged from generator bearing housing flows on the shell side / outer tube surface.
2. Cooling medium (raw river water, circulating fresh water, seawater for marine generators) circulates inside alloy U-tubes (tube side).
3. Heat transfers from high-temperature oil to low-temperature cooling water via tube wall conduction + fluid convection.
4. Cooled oil circulates back to bearings; heated cooling water drains to cooling tower or overboard (marine units).
- Optimized counter-flow layout maximizes Log Mean Temperature Difference (LMTD), lifting heat transfer efficiency by 20%–30% vs parallel flow.
2.2 Air-Cooled Finned Tube Type (For Small Diesel / Isolated Generators)
No water pipeline support required, rely on forced air convection:
1. Hot bearing oil flows inside seamless tubes; external aluminum fins expand heat exchange area.
2. Variable-speed fan blows ambient air across fin surfaces to dissipate heat to atmosphere.
3. Applicable for remote power stations, construction site generators and drought regions without cooling water supply.
All coolers are tailor-made according to generator unit operating conditions, core design indicators as follows:
1. Thermal load: Calculated based on generator rated power, bearing friction loss, reserve safety margin 10%~20% to cope with summer high cooling water temperature. Range: 10kW ~ 800kW for single unit bearing system.
2. Oil side parameters: Lubricant flow rate, oil inlet temperature 70~80°C, target outlet temperature ≤50°C, design oil pressure 0.8~2.5MPa.
3. Cooling medium parameters:
- Fresh water plant: Cooling water inlet 25~33°C, flow velocity 1.0~2.0m/s;
- Marine generator seawater: Max inlet temp 38°C, flow velocity controlled 1.0~2.5m/s to balance erosion and fouling risk.
4. Mechanical dimension: Overall length/diameter, mounting foot hole position, flange interface size fully interchangeable with original OEM coolers for aftermarket replacement, no on-site pipeline reconstruction.
5. Anti-vibration design: Multi-layer stainless steel baffles limit tube bundle displacement, eliminate resonance damage caused by generator long-term rotor vibration.
6. Certification standard: Thermal power/hydropower units comply with GB pressure vessel standards; marine generator coolers support ABS, DNV-GL, LR classification society certification.
Typical Application Coverage
1. Hydropower generation: Vertical thrust & guide bearing coolers of mixed-flow, axial-flow, pumped storage hydro generators.
2. Thermal power station: Steam turbine generator bearing shell-and-tube oil coolers, dual standby cooling system.
3. Combined cycle power plant: Heavy-duty gas turbine generator high-temperature bearing oil coolers.
4. Offshore marine power: Main generator bearing CuNi seawater-resistant coolers on cargo ships, offshore PSV vessels, drilling platforms.
5. Industrial distributed power: Diesel generator air-cooled bearing oil radiators for factories, mines and remote construction sites.
