How Does An Evaporative Air Conditioner Work

Evaporative cooling relies on the natural physical principle: water absorbs heat when it evaporates, lowering air temperature. It only works well in dry, low-humidity climates.

Core components

1. Water reservoir / water supply line

2. Thick porous cooling pads (cellulose, aspen or synthetic)

3. Water pump (circulates water to soak pads)

4. Fan (draws hot outside air through wet pads)

5. Ventilation exhaust windows/vents

Step-by-step working process

1. Wet the cooling media

The pump pushes water from the tank up to the top of the cooling pads. Water drips down and fully saturates the porous pads; excess water flows back into the reservoir for recycling.

2. Hot air passes through wet pads

The fan pulls warm, dry outdoor air through the damp pad surface. The liquid water on the pad rapidly evaporates into vapor using heat energy taken from the passing air.

3. Air temperature drops, humidity rises

Heat transfers from air to water to fuel evaporation. The air loses sensible heat and cools down significantly, while it gains moisture (relative humidity increases).

Typical cooling effect: Air can drop by 5–15°C depending on dryness of outdoor air.

4. Cool fresh air enters the room

The cooled, humidified air is blown into the living space by the fan. Unlike refrigerated AC, it brings continuous fresh outdoor air instead of recirculating indoor air.

5. Mandatory cross ventilation

Evaporative coolers add moisture to enclosed spaces. You must leave windows/doors slightly open to push warm, stale indoor air out. Without exhaust, humidity builds up and cooling efficiency disappears.
