Generator coolers are critical for maintaining the operational safety and efficiency of hydroelectric generators by:


Heat Dissipation: Preventing overheating caused by electrical and mechanical losses (e.g., copper losses, iron losses, friction) during power generation. Excessive heat can damage insulation, windings, and core materials, reducing generator lifespan.

Temperature Stability: Maintaining the generator’s internal components (stator, rotor, bearings) within safe temperature ranges (typically ≤100°C for insulation classes like F or H) to ensure reliable performance.

Efficiency Optimization: Cooling improves electrical conductivity and reduces mechanical stress, enhancing energy conversion efficiency (e.g., preventing efficiency drops due to thermal expansion).


Key Components and Working Principles

Heat Exchanger Design:

Air Coolers: Finned tubes where warm air from the generator passes over cool water or refrigerant coils, transferring heat.

Water Coolers: Hollow conductors in the stator allow water (deionized to prevent corrosion) to flow directly through windings, absorbing heat which is then dissipated in external water tanks or cooling towers.

Cooling Medium Circulation:

For hydrogen cooling, a closed-loop system includes a hydrogen compressor, heat exchanger, and moisture separator to maintain gas purity and pressure (typically 0.3–0.5 MPa).

Control Systems:

Temperature sensors monitor stator/rotor temperatures, triggering fans, pumps, or coolant flow adjustments to maintain set points (e.g., ≤80°C for stator windings).
