Bitcoin miner oil cooling - properly called single-phase immersion cooling — means submerging ASIC mining machines in a tank of non-conductive (dielectric) oil instead of blowing air through them. The oil touches every chip, heatsink and board directly, absorbs the heat, and is pumped through a heat exchanger to an outdoor dry cooler, where fans reject the heat to ambient air; the cooled oil returns to the tank in a closed loop. No water is consumed, no compressor or refrigerant is needed in most climates, the miners' own fans are removed, and the machines run cooler, quieter and longer. CSTHEATEXCHANGER manufactures the complete chain: immersion-optimised dry coolers in standard 40 kW, 120 kW and 240 kW sizes (custom sizes available), the heat exchangers between oil and the external loop, and 40HQ liquid-cooled containers holding up to 420 miners — with cooling efficiency more than 50 % higher and energy consumption more than 30 % lower than air cooling, per our product data.
Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
Oil cooling / immersion cooling / submerged cooling | The miner is fully submerged in a dielectric liquid — mineral oil or an engineered fluid — that does not conduct electricity and does not damage electronics |
Single-phase | The fluid stays liquid; it warms up, is pumped out, cooled and returned. This is the standard for bitcoin mining |
Two-phase | The fluid boils on the hot chips and condenses on a coil in the tank lid; used for the very highest densities. CSTHEATEXCHANGER offers both; single-phase is the mining norm |
Dielectric fluid | The oil itself. Our dry coolers are rated for water, oil, glycol and BC-888-type engineered fluids |
Dry cooler | The outdoor air-cooled heat exchanger that rejects the heat — the part CSTHEATEXCHANGER has built for decades |
Miners sit in the tank. ASIC boards and power supplies are mounted vertically in a stainless or coated-steel tank filled with dielectric oil. The miner's air fans are removed or disabled; the oil is in direct contact with chips and heatsinks.
Oil absorbs the heat. Hashing chips reach their operating temperature; heat flows into the surrounding oil by conduction and convection. Oil carries heat far better than air, so chip temperatures are more uniform and hot spots disappear.
Warm oil is pumped out. A circulation pump draws oil from the warm side of the tank — typically at a dielectric fluid temperature of 45–60 °C in CSTHEATEXCHANGER systems — through a filter to a heat exchanger.
Heat passes to the external loop. In a plate heat exchanger (or directly in an oil-rated dry cooler) the oil gives its heat to a water-glycol loop or straight to the dry-cooler coil.
The dry cooler rejects heat to the air. Outside, the CSTHEATEXCHANGER dry cooler — finned-tube coil, axial fans — passes outdoor air across the coil; the fluid leaves a few degrees above ambient. No evaporation, no water consumption, no compressor.
Cooled oil returns to the tank at the cold side; the loop repeats continuously.
Control. Fan speed on the dry cooler holds the oil supply temperature; sensors monitor tank temperature, pump status and leak detection; in our containers, remote management via phone or PC.
Because the oil runs at 45–60 °C — far above outdoor air in almost every climate — the dry cooler alone can reject the heat year-round, which is why immersion mining needs no chiller.

Benefit | Why it happens | CSTHEATEXCHANGER data |
|---|---|---|
Lower energy | No miner fans, no compressors; dry cooler fans only | >30 % energy saving vs air cooling |
Higher heat removal | Oil contacts the chip directly | >50 % higher cooling efficiency vs air |
Higher density | No airflow limit per rack | Up to 420 miners per 40HQ container |
Overclocking headroom | Lower, more uniform chip temperature | Miners run at optimal condition |
Quiet | No thousands of miner fans | Dry cooler below 65 dB |
Longer hardware life | No dust, no thermal cycling hot spots, no fan failures | Oil provides a protective barrier against dust and contaminants |
Hot and dusty climates | Sealed loop; dry cooler sized for peak ambient | All-weather container operation |
Heat recovery | Warm oil/water loop is a usable heat source | Supported in our containers |
Air-cooled mining | Oil (immersion) cooling | |
|---|---|---|
Heat path | Chip → heatsink → miner fan → room air → exhaust fans / evaporative pads | Chip → oil → heat exchanger → dry cooler → ambient |
Water use | Often evaporative cooling — high | None |
Fans | Thousands (miners + room) | Dry cooler fans only |
Dust | Enters every miner | Excluded by oil |
Noise | Very high | Low |
Density | Limited by airflow | Very high |
Climate sensitivity | High | Low |
Energy for cooling | High | >30 % lower |
No — dielectric oil does not conduct electricity and is compatible with electronics; it protects them from dust and moisture. Fans are removed before immersion.
Typically 45–60 °C in CSTHEATEXCHANGER systems — warm enough that an outdoor dry cooler rejects the heat without a chiller.
In almost all climates, no. The dry cooler alone handles it; adiabatic assist can be added for extreme heat.
Our standard units are 40 kW, 120 kW and 240 kW, scaling from a handful of miners to a large farm; custom sizes are built to the farm's heat load and site ambient.
Yes — our immersion dry coolers are also used for artificial intelligence and machine learning hardware; see our AI data center article.
Send CSTHEATEXCHANGER your miner model and count, total power, site peak ambient and whether you want tank-level equipment, dry coolers only, or a complete 40HQ liquid-cooled container. We will return a sized configuration and specification for approval.
