Shell and Tube Heat Exchangers for Landfill Gas Heat Recovery
Landfill gas contains large amounts of combustible components such as methane. Recovering the heat from these gases through a heat exchanger before they are burned and utilized can improve the overall efficiency of energy use. For example, the recovered heat can be used to preheat the air required for combustion or to heat other processes that require thermal energy, such as hot water supply, building heating, etc.
For other equipment in the landfill gas treatment system, such as burners, generator sets, etc., the preheated gas from the heat exchanger can enable these equipment to operate at more suitable temperature conditions. For example, preheated gas entering the burner can reduce the thermal stress on the burner and reduce the risk of damage to the equipment due to rapid temperature changes, thus extending the service life of the equipment.
Landfill gas heat recovery shell-and-tube heat exchangers consist of two main parts: the shell and the tube bundle. The shell is generally a closed container, usually made of carbon steel or stainless steel, whose role is to accommodate the tube bundle and the heat exchange medium. The tube bundle consists of a number of tubes arranged in parallel, which are usually made of metals with good thermal conductivity, such as copper or stainless steel, with one fluid (such as landfill gas) going inside the tubes and another fluid (such as hot water or thermal oil for heat recovery medium) going in the space between the shell and the tubes.
Design Considerations
Fluid flow rate: Select the appropriate flow rate to optimize heat exchange efficiency and avoid water build-up in the tubes.
Maintenance and cleaning: The design should be maintenance friendly to ensure that the pipes are cleaned regularly to prevent dirt and deposits from affecting the heat exchange efficiency.
Safety: Considering the composition of the landfill gas, the design should have safety protections to prevent leakage and risk of explosion.
