How does a heat pump coil work?
A heat pump coil works through a process of heat transfer.
In the heating mode, the coil acts as an evaporator. It absorbs heat from the outside air (even in cold conditions). A refrigerant inside the coil evaporates, taking in the heat and turning into a gas. The gas is then compressed, which raises its temperature. The hot compressed gas then passes through a second coil, which acts as a condenser. Here, the heat is released into the space that is being heated. The refrigerant condenses back into a liquid and the cycle repeats.
In the cooling mode, the roles are reversed. The coil that was the evaporator in the heating mode now becomes the condenser, releasing heat to the outside, while the other coil becomes the evaporator, extracting heat from the indoor space.
This way, a heat pump coil is able to provide both heating and cooling by efficiently transferring heat between the indoor and outdoor environments. It allows for temperature regulation in a more energy-efficient way compared to traditional heating or cooling methods. For example, in a winter scenario, the heat pump coil pulls heat from the cold outside air and brings it into the house to warm it up. In summer, it takes heat from the inside and dumps it outside to cool the space.
