CO2 Gas Cooler Used in Transcritical CO2 Refrigeration Systems
A CO2 Gas Cooler is a specific type of heat exchanger used in transcritical CO2 refrigeration systems.
Working Fluid: Carbon Dioxide (CO2 or R744).
State of the Fluid: It is called a "Gas Cooler" because, under the high-pressure conditions of a transcritical cycle, the CO2 does not condense into a liquid at the outlet. It remains in a supercritical or gaseous state throughout the cooling process.
How it Works:
High-Pressure, High-Temperature Gas: Hot, high-pressure CO2 gas (after being compressed) enters the gas cooler.
Sensible Cooling Only: The CO2 is cooled by ambient air (or water) blowing over the fins of the heat exchanger. Crucially, it does not condense. It only reduces in temperature (this is called "sensible cooling").
Cooled, Dense Fluid: It exits as a high-pressure, warm gas (or dense supercritical fluid) ready to be expanded into the evaporator.
