Dry coolers are attractive for AI data centers because they fit the needs of high-density liquid cooling while helping operators control both energy use and water use. AI racks generate far more heat than conventional server rooms, so facility cooling has to reject large heat loads efficiently and reliably. Liquid cooling is becoming central to that shift, and dry coolers are a practical outdoor heat-rejection option within that architecture.
They are especially attractive for four reasons.
First, they support very high heat densities. AI and GPU clusters are increasingly cooled with direct-to-chip liquid cooling and CDUs, and dry coolers work well on the facility side of those systems by removing heat from the liquid loop. That makes them a strong match for modern AI deployments.
Second, they help reduce water consumption. Unlike cooling towers, dry coolers reject heat to ambient air instead of relying on continuous evaporation. NVIDIA has specifically emphasized water efficiency as a major advantage of modern AI liquid-cooling approaches.
Third, they can improve overall energy efficiency, especially when paired with warmer liquid temperatures. NVIDIA recently noted that operating at higher liquid temperatures can let many data centers use ambient air and closed-loop dry coolers, reducing the need for compressors and lowering PUE. Vertiv likewise highlights AI-ready trim coolers that support free cooling at elevated return-water temperatures.
Fourth, they support modular growth and simpler infrastructure. Dry coolers are outdoor, scalable units that can be added as AI capacity expands, and they integrate naturally with CDU-based liquid cooling systems. That makes them attractive for new AI builds and phased expansions.
