What Is The Function of An Economiser in A Boiler

The economiser acts as a heat recovery system, converting waste energy from exhaust gases into useful preheating for the feedwater, thereby improving both the economic and environmental performance of the boiler.

1. Recovering Waste Heat from Flue Gases

Extracts heat from the hot exhaust gases (flue gases) that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere.

This heat is transferred to the feedwater before it enters the boiler drum, preheating the water and reducing the energy needed to convert it into steam.

2. Improving Boiler Efficiency

By preheating the feedwater, the economiser reduces the amount of fuel required for the boiler to generate steam.

This leads to lower operational costs (e.g., reduced fuel consumption) and higher overall efficiency (typically a 5–15% energy saving, depending on the design).

3. Mitigating Thermal Stress on the Boiler

Preheated feedwater enters the boiler at a higher temperature, minimizing the temperature difference between the water and the boiler tubes.

This reduces thermal stress on the boiler components, extending their lifespan and decreasing the risk of damage from sudden temperature changes.

4. Enhancing Steam Output Capacity

With preheated feedwater, the boiler can produce more steam using the same amount of fuel, increasing its operational capacity without additional fuel input.

5. Reducing Environmental Impact

Lower fuel consumption results in reduced emissions of carbon dioxide (CO₂), nitrogen oxides (NOₓ), and sulfur oxides (SOₓ), aligning with environmental regulations and sustainability goals.

Example of How It Works

Heat Transfer Mechanism: Feedwater flows through tubes inside the economiser, while flue gases pass around the tubes (often in a counter-flow configuration to maximize heat exchange).

Temperature Effect: The feedwater temperature can rise to within 10–20°C of the boiler’s saturation temperature, while flue gas temperatures drop by 30–100°C, depending on the design.
