What is The Difference Between Plate Heat Exchanger and Tubular Heat Exchanger?


Plate heat exchanger is a new type of high-efficiency heat exchanger made of a series of metal plates with a certain corrugated shape stacked together. A thin rectangular channel is formed between the various plates, and heat is exchanged through the half-sheets. It is compared with the conventional shell and tube heat exchanger, in the same flow resistance and pump power consumption, its heat transfer coefficient is much higher, in the applicable range of the trend to replace the shell and tube heat exchanger. Plate heat exchanger is a thin metal plate pressed into a certain corrugated shape of the heat exchanger plate, and then stacked, with clamps, bolts and fastened into a heat exchanger. The working fluid flows through the narrow and zigzag channel formed between the two plates. Hot and cold fluids pass through the flow channel in turn, with a spacer plate in the middle to separate the fluids and exchange heat through this plate. The structure and heat exchange principle of plate heat exchanger determines that it has the characteristics of compact structure, small footprint, high heat transfer efficiency, high operational flexibility, wide range of applications, small heat loss, easy installation and cleaning. The average temperature difference between the two media can be as small as 1℃, and the heat recovery efficiency can reach more than 99%. In the case of the same pressure loss, plate heat exchanger heat transfer is tube heat exchanger 3 to 5 times, covers an area of 1 / 3, metal consumption of only 2 / 3.

Tubular Heat Exchanger consists of two main parts: external shell and internal cooling body. Due to the different specific structure, from the external connection form is divided into pipe thread type and flange type; from the installation form is divided into horizontal and vertical; from the floating form is divided into floating disc type and floating head type; from the cooling tube structure is divided into screw tube type and finned tube type; from the folding structure is divided into bow folding plate, rectangle folding plate, double weir shaped folding plate and round folding plate and other structural forms, are selected according to the specific conditions.


The external shell includes: barrel, water distribution cover and water return cover. It is equipped with inlet and outlet oil pipes and inlet and outlet water pipes, with oil drainage, drainage, exhaust screw plugs, zinc bar mounting holes and thermometer interfaces.


Cooling body consists of cooling tube, fixed hole disc, dynamic hole disc, folding plate and so on. Both ends of the cooling pipe are connected with the fixed and movable hole discs; the fixed hole disc is connected with the flange of the outer body, and the movable hole disc can be freely expanded and contracted in the outer body, so as to eliminate the influence of the temperature on the cooling pipe due to thermal expansion and contraction. Folding plate to strengthen heat transfer and support the role of the cooling tube.


The hot medium of the tube cooler is imported from the receiver on the cylinder body, and flows to the receiver outlet in a zigzag manner through the folding channels in sequence. And the cooling medium is a two-pipe flow, that is, the cooling medium from the inlet through the water cover into half of the cooling tube, and then from the return cover into the other half of the cooling tube into the other side of the water cover and the outlet pipe. Cold medium in the double pipe laminar flow process, absorption of waste heat released by the hot medium by the outlet discharge, so that the working medium to maintain the rated operating temperature.



Comprehensive comparison of the two

Tube cooler and plate cooler than the cross-flow cross-section is wider, the cooling water quality requirements are lower.

Tube cooler internal seals less, high temperature on the cooler less impact.

The tube cooler mechanism allows it to withstand higher pressures (both of the cooling medium and the medium being cooled).

Tube cooler cooling efficiency is low, so compared with the same cooling effect of the plate cooler covers a large area, heavy mass, high price.

Tube cooler internal piping, leakage is not easy to find, and cleaning up the dirt is also very difficult.


Plate cooler due to the narrow cross-section of the flow, so the water quality requirements are high.

Due to the plate cooler plate seal needs sealing ring, high temperature will reduce the service life of the sealing ring, and the replacement process is more complex, so the plate cooler on the use of high ambient temperature requirements.

Plate structure and tube type compared to the pressure capacity is low, can not be used for higher pressure environment.

Plate cooler is easy to clean after disassembly, plate damage is easy to find the problem and replacement.
