Air preheaters recover heat from the flue gas and use it to preheat the combustion air before it enters the boiler. This reduces the amount of fuel needed to heat the air, improving overall boiler efficiency. There are two main types of air preheaters: recuperative and regenerative.
Recuperative Air Preheaters: These heat exchangers transfer heat from the flue gas to the incoming combustion air through a metal surface. The two streams flow on opposite sides of the metal surface, allowing heat transfer to occur.
Regenerative Air Preheaters: In regenerative air preheaters, a rotating heat storage matrix or wheel absorbs heat from the flue gas. The matrix then rotates to transfer this heat to the incoming combustion air before it enters the boiler.
