Liquid-to-Liquid CDU vs. Liquid-to-Air CDU Guide | CSTHEATEXCHANGER

In data center liquid cooling architectures, the choice between a Liquid-to-Liquid (L2L) Coolant Distribution Unit and a Liquid-to-Air (L2A) Coolant Distribution Unit is defined by rack power density, existing facility infrastructure, and energy efficiency targets. A Liquid-to-Liquid (L2L) CDU utilizes a high-efficiency Brazed Plate Heat Exchanger (BPHE) to transfer heat from the secondary server loop into a primary facility water system (FWS connected to external dry coolers or cooling towers), supporting extreme thermal densities (50 kW to >2.5 MW per CDU) at sub-1.02 PUE with zero room heat rejection. Conversely, a Liquid-to-Air (L2A) CDU acts as a self-contained, "zero-plumbing" radiator unit using liquid-to-air finned-tube or microchannel coils and high-CFM EC fans to reject heat directly into the data center's white space air, supporting moderate thermal loads (10 kW to 40 kW per rack) in legacy air-cooled facilities without facility water loops.

HIGH-DENSITY SERVER RACK (DIRECT-TO-CHIP CPU / GPU MICRO-CHANNEL COLD PLATES)

1. Liquid-to-Liquid (L2L) CDU Mechanics

The L2L CDU uses a vacuum-brazed stainless steel (SS316L) or titanium plate heat exchanger. The secondary coolant circulating across GPU cold plates transfers heat to the facility water loop across thin corrugated plates with zero fluid cross-contamination. The heat is pumped out of the data hall entirely to outdoor dry coolers.

2. Liquid-to-Air (L2A) CDU Mechanics

The L2A CDU operates like an industrial automotive radiator. Hot secondary coolant flows through a multi-pass finned-tube or all-aluminum microchannel coil, while integrated high-static-pressure EC blowers force ambient server room air across the coil. The heat is rejected directly into the data center room's hot aisle, which must then be managed by existing room air conditioning (CRAC/CRAH).

3. When to Choose a Liquid-to-Liquid (L2L) CDU

PRIMARY SELECTION CRITERIA FOR LIQUID-TO-LIQUID (L2L) CDUs

   [CRITERIA 1: ULTRA-HIGH POWER DENSITY (> 40 kW - 150 kW+ PER RACK)]
   • Modern AI GPU clusters (NVIDIA GB200, H100, AMD MI300X) exceed the thermal

facility with strict prohibitions against running water pipes to the white space.
   ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
[CRITERIA 2: EDGE COMPUTING & REMOTE WORKSTATIONS]

6. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can an L2A CDU cool a 100kW AI GPU rack?

No. An L2A CDU is physically limited by the heat capacity of air and physical chassis volume. Rejecting 100 kW100 kW of heat directly into room air would require an enormous airflow volume (>8,000 CFM) that cannot fit within a standard rack form factor and would overwhelm the room's CRAC units. Racks above 40 kW to 50 kW strictly require a Liquid-to-Liquid (L2L) CDU.

Does a Liquid-to-Air CDU eliminate the need for data center air conditioning?

No. An L2A CDU removes heat from the processors and dumps it into the server room air. Therefore, the data center's existing computer room air conditioners (CRAC/CRAH) must still run to remove that heat from the room. An L2A CDU only solves the chip-level thermal bottleneck; an L2L CDU removes the heat from the room entirely.

How does CSTHEATEXCHANGER ensure zero leaks in L2L CDUs?

CSTHEATEXCHANGER L2L CDUs feature vacuum-brazed SS316L heat exchangers, sealless canned-motor pumps, non-spill blind-mate Universal Quick Disconnects (UQDs), deep internal drip trays, optical liquid sensors, and continuous sensing ropes with automated shutoff valves. Every unit undergoes 100% Helium Mass Spectrometer Leak Testing (<1×10−6 mbar⋅l/s) before shipment.
