Ammonia evaporators are the core heat‑exchange components of ammonia‑based industrial refrigeration systems. Their primary function is to absorb heat from the surrounding air or process medium by liquid ammonia vaporizing, creating low‑temperature conditions for cold storage, blast freezers, food processing plants and large‑scale industrial cooling projects.
Working Principle
Liquid ammonia feeding: Low‑pressure liquid ammonia (refrigerant) flows into the evaporator coil, throttled by expansion valves. Two mainstream configurations are widely used: DX (direct‑expansion) ammonia evaporator and flooded ammonia evaporator.
Heat absorption & phase change: Liquid ammonia absorbs sensible and latent heat from the process air passing over fin‑and‑tube coils. The liquid ammonia boils and turns into low‑temperature ammonia gas. This heat removal drops the air temperature for freezing or cold‑room applications.
Suction back to compressor: The gaseous ammonia is drawn out of the evaporator by the industrial refrigeration compressor. It is then compressed, condensed and recycled in the closed ammonia refrigeration loop.
Defrost cycle support: Industrial ammonia evaporators for low‑temperature blast freezers require regular defrosting (hot‑gas ammonia defrost is common) to remove frost buildup on fins, restoring heat‑exchange efficiency.
