GLYCOL UNIT COOLERS

Glycol unit coolers, also known as glycol air coolers or glycol coil coolers, are refrigeration components that use a glycol/water mixture to cool air in refrigeration systems. They are typically used in applications where direct expansion (DX) cooling with refrigerant is not feasible or desired, such as in cold storage facilities, walk-in coolers, or other commercial refrigeration systems.

Here's an overview of glycol unit coolers and their operation:

Design and Construction: Glycol unit coolers consist of a coil or set of coils that are designed to be mounted in the space to be cooled, such as inside a refrigerated room or air handling unit. The coils are typically made of copper or aluminum and are configured to maximize heat transfer efficiency. The glycol/water mixture flows through these coils, absorbing heat from the surrounding air.

Glycol Circulation: A pump circulates the glycol/water mixture through the coils of the unit cooler. The glycol solution absorbs heat from the air passing over the coil, cooling the air in the process. The cooled air is then distributed throughout the refrigerated space using fans.

Glycol Refrigeration System: The glycol unit cooler is connected to a refrigeration system that typically consists of a compressor, condenser, and expansion valve. The refrigeration system circulates a refrigerant, such as R-404A or R-134a, which transfers heat to the glycol/water mixture in the unit cooler. The refrigerant evaporates in the evaporator coil of the unit cooler, absorbing heat and cooling the glycol solution.

Benefits of Glycol Cooling: Using glycol as the heat transfer medium offers several advantages. It provides freeze protection in colder environments, allowing the cooling system to operate without the risk of freezing. Glycol also helps prevent corrosion within the system and improves heat transfer efficiency.

System Controls and Monitoring: Glycol unit coolers are typically equipped with control systems that regulate the operation of the refrigeration system and the glycol circulation pump. These controls maintain the desired temperature and optimize energy efficiency.

Glycol unit coolers are commonly used in applications where there is a need for reliable and efficient cooling while avoiding direct contact between the refrigerant and the conditioned space. They offer flexibility in system design and are particularly useful in low-temperature applications where freeze protection is critical.
