An ammonia (NH3, R717) evaporator coil must be built in stainless steel or aluminium tube. Copper and copper alloys — including brass and cupronickel — are not compatible with ammonia: in the presence of even small amounts of moisture, ammonia attacks copper rapidly, and the coil fails.
