What Happens If A RDHX Water Leak Occurs? Is There Leak Detection?

Water Leak Consequences & Full Leak Detection System for RDHX (Rear Door Heat Exchanger)

1. What happens if a water leak occurs?

RDHX uses secondary glycol water loop separated from IT hardware; risks are tiered by leak severity, with multi-layer containment to avoid hardware damage:

Minor slow seepage (loose fitting, aged O-ring)

Small water drips fall into the built-in drip tray under the RDHX frame, no contact with servers, GPUs or optical modules inside the rack.

Triggers early warning alarm only; the rack, IT equipment and cooling loop keep running normally.

No immediate downtime; maintenance team can inspect and fix during maintenance window.

Moderate dripping leak (damaged hose, loose manifold joint)

Liquid accumulates in the integrated rack bottom containment tray.

Dual leak sensors activate simultaneous alarm + CDU flow/pressure anomaly alert.

Automatic zone isolation valves cut off water supply to this single rack only; all other racks on the cooling loop remain fully operational.

The affected rack’s IT equipment stays powered temporarily for controlled graceful shutdown.

Severe rupture leak (coil crack, pipe burst)

Fast pressure drop is instantly captured by CDU pressure transmitters, triggering emergency interlock.

Rack isolation valves close within 1 second to stop fluid outflow.

BMS/DCIM sends SMS, dashboard pop-up and on-site audible/visual beacon alarms.

Smart PDU initiates safe power-off of all servers inside the leaking rack to eliminate short-circuit risk.

Full containment tray holds 110% of the RDHX internal water volume, preventing spillage to the data center floor.

Key advantage vs direct cold plate liquid cooling

All water circuits are located at the rack rear door, separated from server PCB, GPU and optical module electronics. Even if leakage happens, coolant cannot drip onto sensitive IT chips directly, drastically reducing hardware burnout risk.

2. Complete leak detection configuration (standard equipped on our RDHX)

(1) On-rack physical liquid sensors (primary detection)

Conductive leak sensing cables laid along the bottom drip tray, under all pipe connections and coil manifolds (highest leak-risk zones).

Point-type water immersion sensors installed at the lowest tray sump to capture pooled liquid.

Dual-sensor validation logic: single sensor dampness = warning alarm; two sensors triggered simultaneously = critical leak isolation command.

(2) Water-side real-time monitoring (secondary cross-check)

Pressure sensors on supply/return water lines: sudden pressure drop indicates pipe rupture or large leakage.

Flow meters monitor loop flow rate; abnormal flow loss matches leak alarms to avoid false positives.

CDU built-in liquid level sensors: rapid reservoir water decline gives global backup leak alert.

(3) Digital alarm linkage system

Local alarm: red flashing beacon + buzzer mounted on RDHX door frame.

Remote monitoring: signals uploaded to DCIM, BMS or customer monitoring platform via RS485 / Modbus TCP.

Notification: automatic SMS/email alert to facility maintenance on-call staff.

3. Multi-layer leak prevention & containment design (built-in safety)

Integrated full-length drip tray under the entire RDHX unit with drain outlet for easy liquid draining.

Double O-ring quick-disconnect water couplings to reduce joint leakage probability.

Vacuum-brazed heat exchange coil with zero internal splicing seams to avoid coil cracking leaks.

Independent isolation ball valves per rack, enabling single rack water cut-off without draining the whole cooling row.

Compressible sealing gaskets prevent hot air bypass and avoid dew condensation dripping inside the rack.

4. Brief summary

Yes, comprehensive multi-level leak detection is standard for all RDHX units, combining liquid contact sensors, pressure/flow monitoring and CDU level detection.

Minor leaks only trigger alerts without downtime; major leaks auto-isolate the single rack and safely power off internal servers, with full liquid containment to protect IT hardware.

The rear-mounted layout of RDHX fundamentally lowers short-circuit risks compared to direct GPU/optical module cold plates.
