What Does An Ammonia Evaporator Consist Of?

The primary function of the ammonia evaporator is to facilitate the evaporation of ammonia from a liquid to a gas.

In the evaporator, the high-pressure, liquid ammonia enters and undergoes a phase change, absorbing heat from the surroundings (air or a process fluid) in the process.

As the liquid ammonia absorbs heat, it evaporates, turning into a low-pressure, cold ammonia vapor.

Components:

Coils or Tubes:

The evaporator typically consists of coils or tubes made of materials like copper or aluminum.

These coils provide a large surface area for the exchange of heat between the ammonia and the surrounding medium.

Expansion Valve:

The expansion valve is located before the evaporator and controls the flow of high-pressure liquid ammonia into the evaporator coils.

It reduces the pressure of the ammonia, allowing it to expand and evaporate.

Fan or Blower:

In air-cooled ammonia evaporators, a fan or blower is used to blow air across the coils, facilitating heat exchange.

This airflow helps to cool the air or process fluid circulating around the evaporator.

Refrigerant Distributor:

A refrigerant distributor ensures an even distribution of liquid ammonia across the evaporator coils, promoting efficient evaporation.
