The rear door heat exchanger coil developed for server racks transfers directly to air-cooled battery racks in a BESS container. Mounted on the rear of the battery cabinet, the air-to-liquid coil captures the warm exhaust from the battery modules and rejects it to a glycol loop and an outdoor dry cooler, so each rack is cooled individually and the container's shared air system can be smaller — or removed. CSTHEATEXCHANGER manufactures rear door cooling coils for standard 19-inch racks in passive and active versions and adapts them to battery cabinet dimensions, with corrosion-protected fins for outdoor containers and the matching dry cooler on the same loop.
Battery life depends on temperature uniformity. In a container with a shared air system, racks near the air supply run cooler than racks at the far end, and cells inside each rack see a gradient from inlet to outlet. A rear door coil on every rack gives each rack its own heat exchanger on a common water loop:
Shared air system | Rear door coil per rack |
|---|---|
Rack-to-rack temperature spread | Each rack cooled to the same water temperature |
Large ducts and fans in the container | Slim doors; container air system reduced |
Hot exhaust mixes into container air | Exhaust cooled at the rack |
One large fan failure affects all racks | Door-level redundancy (active) or no fans (passive) |
This is the air-cooled BESS integrator's step toward liquid-cooling uniformity without changing the battery modules themselves.
Feature | BESS specification |
|---|---|
Mounting | Rear-door mounted, ultra-slim; standard 19-inch frame or custom battery-cabinet dimensions |
Versions | Passive where the battery rack's own fans provide airflow; active with integrated EC fans where rack fans are small or absent |
Water side | Glycol loop to an outdoor dry cooler (CSTHEATEXCHANGER supply) or to a chiller |
Coil | Copper tube / aluminium fin; pre-coated anti-corrosion aluminium fins or copper fins for outdoor containers; hydrophilic coating where condensation is possible |
Heating option | Loop can carry warm glycol in winter so the same coil pre-warms cells before charging |
Quality | Leak-tested; service-friendly |
Customisation | Capacity, cabinet height, connection type, fan configuration, control interface; private labelling for integrators |
For an outdoor BESS container the rear door coils are normally fed by a roof- or side-mounted dry cooler. CSTHEATEXCHANGER dry coolers use hot-dip galvanized steel casings with zinc-aluminium coating, staggered seamless copper tubes with corrugated aluminium fins, thick seamless copper headers with threaded steel connections, direct-drive maintenance-free axial fans, and are pressure tested at 15 bar. Where the site's summer ambient is too high for a dry cooler to hold the battery setpoint, we supply hybrid or adiabatic coolers instead. Because we build the coils and the dry cooler, the loop is designed end to end.
