In lithium battery cathode coating & drying workshops, the drying oven exhaust carries high-temperature waste gas loaded with NMP vapor (80~120°C).
Complete process flow:
Fresh ambient air → Plate Fin Heat Exchanger (preheating) → Heater → Coating Drying Oven
Hot waste gas (NMP vapor) → Plate Fin Heat Exchanger (heat releasing & pre-cooling) → Multi-stage Condenser (NMP liquefaction & recovery) → Tail gas treatment → Discharge
Without a plate fin heat exchanger, cold fresh air needs full heating, and high-temperature exhaust directly enters condensers. This leads to huge heating power consumption, heavy load on chillers and low NMP recovery ratio.
Core Functions of Plate Fin Heat Exchanger inside NMP Recovery System
1. Recover waste heat to preheat fresh air
Hot exhaust transfers heat to incoming fresh air via isolated channels. The fresh air temperature rises from 20~25°C to 50~65°C, greatly reducing the heating load of steam or electric heaters. Energy saving rate reaches 30%~45%.
2. Pre-cool waste gas to boost NMP condensation efficiency
After releasing heat in the plate fin core, exhaust temperature drops to 40~55°C. Lower inlet temperature for the condenser reduces cooling demand and creates favorable conditions for NMP vapor liquefaction, lifting overall solvent recovery rate from 82% up to 90%~95%.
3. Completely isolate air streams to avoid cross-contamination
Fresh air channel and NMP waste gas channel are fully separated by laser-welded partitions. No gas mixing occurs. Clean preheated air prevents pollution to electrode raw materials, satisfying strict lithium battery production requirements.
Important Note:
The plate fin heat exchanger carries out sensible heat recovery only. The waste gas outlet temperature is controlled above the NMP dew point. No NMP liquid condenses inside the exchanger core, avoiding liquid accumulation, internal corrosion and blockage. All NMP condensation happens in the subsequent condenser unit.
