How does HVAC heating coil work?
The HVAC heating coil works through the following process:
When the HVAC system is in the heating mode, a heated fluid (such as hot water or steam) or an electric current passes through the heating coil. The coil is designed to have a large surface area. As the heated fluid or current flows through the coil, it transfers heat to the coil itself. The air is then forced to pass over the heated coil. As the air comes in contact with the hot coil, it absorbs the heat and is warmed up. This warmed air is then distributed throughout the space to raise the temperature and provide heating.
For instance, in a hydronic heating system with a water-based heating coil, hot water circulates through the coil. The air from the blower is directed over the coil, gets heated, and is sent into the room. Similarly, in an electric HVAC system, the electric current passing through the resistance wire in the coil generates heat, which is then transferred to the passing air. This basic principle allows the HVAC heating coil to effectively raise the temperature and create a comfortable indoor environment.
