How Does A CO2 Refrigeration System Work?

A CO2 refrigeration system, also known as a transcritical CO2 system or a CO2 cascade system, is a type of refrigeration system that uses carbon dioxide (CO2) as the refrigerant. It operates based on the principles of thermodynamics and the phase change of CO2.

Here's a simplified explanation of how a CO2 refrigeration system works:

  1. Compression: The process starts with a compressor that compresses gaseous CO2, increasing its pressure and temperature. The compressor is typically driven by an electric motor. The compressed CO2 is referred to as supercritical CO2.

  2. Heat Rejection: The supercritical CO2 then flows to a heat exchanger, known as a gas cooler or gas condenser. In the gas cooler, the heat from the hot CO2 is transferred to a separate cooling medium, such as water or air. This process causes the CO2 to cool and partially condense, transitioning from a supercritical state to a subcritical state.

  3. Expansion: The partially condensed CO2 then passes through an expansion valve. The expansion valve reduces the pressure of the CO2, causing it to rapidly expand. This expansion leads to a significant drop in temperature, which allows the CO2 to absorb heat from the surroundings.

  4. Heat Absorption: The cooled and expanded CO2 now enters an evaporator, which is typically located inside the space that needs to be cooled. As the CO2 absorbs heat from the surrounding environment, it undergoes a phase change from a liquid to a gas. This heat absorption causes the temperature in the evaporator to decrease, cooling the desired space.

  5. Return to Compressor: The gaseous CO2 from the evaporator is then returned to the compressor, and the cycle repeats.

It's important to note that CO2 refrigeration systems operate at higher pressures compared to traditional refrigerants like hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). The critical point of CO2 is relatively low, so the system must be designed to handle these higher pressures. Additionally, CO2 is an environmentally friendly refrigerant with a low global warming potential, making it an attractive option for refrigeration applications.
