Dry Coolers in Generator Sets Aboard Ocean-going Vessels

Working Principle: Dry coolers operate based on the air-to-liquid heat exchange principle. Within the cooling systems of marine vessel generator sets, air flow is typically driven by durable AC motors. This air passes over finned tubes containing heated process fluid, dissipating heat into the surrounding environment through convection and conduction. This cools the fluid within the tubes, thereby cooling the associated components of the generator set.

Advantages and Features

Marine Environment Adaptability: Ocean environments feature high salt fog and humidity. Dry coolers typically use corrosion-resistant materials like AISI 316L stainless steel for tubing, with external structures coated in specialized anti-corrosion finishes such as polyester or epoxy. This effectively resists seawater corrosion, ensuring equipment durability and longevity.

Water Conservation: Dry coolers utilize air as the cooling medium, eliminating the need for large volumes of water required by traditional cooling methods. This is particularly crucial for ocean-going vessels with limited onboard water resources, as dry coolers significantly reduce water consumption and decrease dependence on freshwater supplies.

Space Efficiency: With limited space on vessels, dry coolers feature compact designs that achieve efficient heat dissipation within confined areas, meeting the cooling demands of shipboard generator sets.

Function in Generator Sets: Generator sets on ocean-going vessels, such as diesel generators, generate substantial heat during operation requiring immediate cooling to prevent overheating. As a key component of the closed-loop cooling system, dry coolers remove heat from the generator set's thermal fluid, dissipate it into ambient air, and recirculate the cooled fluid back to the generator set. This process ensures optimal generator performance and extends equipment lifespan. - closed-loop cooling system, they dissipate heat generated by the generator set into ambient air via circulating heat transfer fluid. The cooled fluid is then returned to the generator set, ensuring it operates within optimal temperature ranges. This enhances efficiency and reliability while extending equipment lifespan.
