Dry Cooler to Cool Servers

dry coolers for data center cooling

A customer from India wanted to use dry coolers to cool their servers, here is the design information provided by the customer:

Cooled by Type 1 Ultra Pure Water Cooler designed for 70 machines consuming 8000 watts/hour each, i.e. total power consumption 560KW, all power is converted to 100% heat.

Flow rate: 840 litres/minute

Input to server: 25 HW

Output from server: 35

DBT: 35

Server cooling: servers consume 580 kW/hour of power, 100% converted to heat

Dry coolers, also known as dry cooling towers or air-cooled heat exchangers, can be used to cool servers in a data centre or server room. These cooling systems are an alternative to traditional liquid cooling methods, such as water cooling, to effectively manage the heat generated by servers.

How dry coolers cool servers:

Air Cooling: dry coolers work on the principle of air cooling. They use ambient air to dissipate the heat generated by the server. This makes them a suitable choice for locations where a readily available water supply may not be available or where water conservation is required.

Heat exchange: Dry coolers consist of one or a series of coils, usually located outside the data centre or server room. These coils contain refrigerant or coolant. Inside the data centre, the servers are connected to a closed-loop system that circulates another fluid, usually water or a glycol-water mixture.

Heat transfer: The heat generated by the servers is absorbed by the fluid circulating inside the closed-loop system. This hot fluid is then pumped to a dry cooler located outside.

Cooling Process: In a dry cooler, the hot fluid flows through a coil and one or more fans draw ambient air through the coil. As the air passes over the coils, it absorbs heat from the fluid, which causes the fluid to cool.

Heat Dissipation: The now cooled fluid is pumped back into the data centre to absorb more heat from the servers and the cycle continues. The heat absorbed by the air is released to the outside environment which cools the fluid and prepares it for another round of cooling.
