Chilled Water Cooling Coil for Air Supply Unit
A chilled water cooling coil is a critical component of an air supply unit (ASU) in HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems. Here’s a detailed overview:
Function
The primary function of a chilled water cooling coil is to cool down the air that passes over it. This is achieved through the following steps:
Chilled Water Circulation: Cold water, typically between 4°C to 7°C, is circulated through the cooling coil.
Heat Exchange: Warm air from the space or fresh air intake passes over the cooling coil. The heat from the air is transferred to the chilled water inside the coil.
Cooling the Air: As the air loses heat to the chilled water, its temperature drops, providing a cooling effect.
Dehumidification: In addition to cooling, the coil also helps in dehumidifying the air. When warm, moist air comes into contact with the cold surface of the coil, moisture condenses out of the air and is drained away, reducing the humidity levels.
Components
Coil: Made of copper or aluminum tubing with fins to increase the surface area for better heat transfer.
Chilled Water Supply and Return Lines: Pipes that carry chilled water to and from the coil.
Drain Pan: Collects condensate formed during the dehumidification process and directs it to a drain.
Control Valves: Regulate the flow of chilled water through the coil, allowing precise control of cooling capacity.
Design Considerations
Coil Size and Surface Area: Determined by the cooling load requirements. Larger coils with more surface area provide greater cooling capacity.
Airflow Rate: The amount of air passing over the coil must be sufficient to achieve the desired cooling effect.
Chilled Water Temperature and Flow Rate: Properly maintained to ensure efficient heat transfer.
