CO2 Evaporators Design


A CO2 evaporator is a heat exchanger used in refrigeration systems to absorb heat from a space, causing the refrigerant (CO2) to evaporate and become a low-pressure gas, which is then compressed and cooled again to complete the refrigeration cycle.


Function:

In a refrigeration system, the evaporator is a crucial component where the refrigerant (in this case, CO2) absorbs heat from the surrounding space, causing it to evaporate from a liquid state to a gaseous state.

How it works:

The CO2 refrigerant enters the evaporator as a low-pressure, low-temperature liquid-vapor mixture. As it flows through the evaporator, it absorbs heat from the air or medium it's designed to cool, causing it to evaporate and become a low-pressure gas.


Applications:

CO2 evaporators are used in various refrigeration applications, including:

Industrial refrigeration

Refrigeration in the food industry

Refrigeration in transport

Low-temperature air conditioning, such as in food preparation areas

Comfort cooling applications


Design Considerations:

Pressure: CO2 evaporators are designed to handle the high pressures associated with CO2 refrigeration systems, which can exceed the critical pressure value.

Heat Transfer: The high internal heat transfer coefficient of CO2 is a factor in evaporator design, meaning that the effect of heat transfer on the evaporating capacity is practically negligible.

Defrosting: CO2 evaporators can be designed with various defrosting methods, such as water, hot gas, electric, or interlaced glycol circuits.
